When most entrepreneurs were dreaming of starting their own dot.com, Fadi Baaklini bucked the trend in the mid-1990s by launching a company modelled on the “old economy.” By 2017, MEPCO had become a prosperous multinational company buying and selling a broad range of paper and paperboard products on markets in the Middle East, North Africa, and India. It has now a turnover of more than US$100 million.
The history of MEPCO and its CEO is the subject of a case study published by ESA and distributed by Harvard publishing.
Mr. Fadi Baaklini & Dr. Abdel Maoula Chaar will be discussing the peculiarity of this entrepreneurial journey as well as the added value of case studies for businesspersons and students.

In 1991 Mr. Fadi Baaklini started working for Brastimber a company active in wood and timber import from Brazil and sales into the GCC, in 1993 the company entrusted Mr. Baaklini to start a new division of Paper, the small branch eventually grew expanded its sales reach to markets in Africa, Middle East and GCC.
In 1997 he established his own company Mepco Ltd; within 22 years the company grew from its modest beginnings into the Mepco Group of companies; it is today running 5 offices in the region and covering more than 32 markets in various Pulp, Paper and Boards products range.
Dr. Abdel Maoula Chaar teaches doctoral and master level courses in methodology, master level courses in alternative finance and strategic management as well as organization theory and sustainable development at a bachelor level at ESA Business School.
His research interests include the various facets of resilience in post-conflict cities, sustainable development and entrepreneurship view from a critical angle.
