5 tips on graduating through a crisis

2020 graduates may be worried about kicking off their career in a time of uncertainty – with good reasons. However, former graduates have been there before them: the class of 2009 also encountered a devastated economy and a tough job market following the 2008 credit crunch. 10 years later, their career paths prove the crisis didn’t prevent them from taking off and following amazing paths.

On May 19, Violaine, Tarek, Capucine and Antoine reflected on their careers debuts and shared their best advice on how to thrive and succeed through a global crisis. Here’s what we’ve learned:

#1: Perseverance pays

Crisis or not, being intentional and persistent about your job search is key. Hustling, banging on doors, preparing thoroughly for every job interview… are all part of the job-hunting process. Be tactical: you want to spot high potential and fast-growing companies as per listings. Your diploma is a golden asset, but the well-rounded education you’ve received and your ability to adapt will also help you thrive and uncover new resources.

#2: Learn to pivot – and trust your gut

Be pragmatic! Don’t chase that perfect Plan A job at all costs when Plan B is here waiting for you. Why not turning the crisis into an opportunity for self-discovery and new learning experiences? In 2009, Capucine chose to cut all ties and became a scuba diving instructor for 2 years, whilst the corporate world was at its worst. Her belief? Whatever the job, there will always be an opportunity to learn and pick up new skills. So, forget your prejudice against this sector or that position: embrace the challenge and dare to follow a different path.

#3: Use your network…

… to have meaningful conversations, not to ask for jobs. With 60 000 members, HEC Alumni is the strongest network of professionals coming from all industries, at all seniority levels. Reach out to them to understand what they do and how to do it too. Show your interest. Whether you need an answer to a specific question or long-term support to start your career, you can find your mentor on our new online mentoring platform. 100% free, 200% useful.

#4: Crises are a time for technological breakthroughs

You probably noticed how quickly the use of remote work tools grew over the past few weeks. Trendsetting companies such as Facebook and Google have already extended working from home to the end of the year. Many have predicted there will be no return to the situation prior to Covid19. A similar technological breakthrough took place in 2009, that led to the rise of companies such as Airbnb, Slack, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Uber, Zendesk, Square, Farfetch… now considered some of the most desirable places to work. Watch out for the exciting new kids on the block!

#5: Cheer up!

Crises don’t just make you more resilient and creative (something your future employers will give you credit for); they also enable you to imagine new possible futures. Still stressed out? Give yourself the love you need to fight your battle: meditation, yoga, exercise, or simply hanging out with friends and feeling comfortable. Then remember that 2009 alumni got jobs, great careers, and everybody eventually turned out (more than) OK. You will too.
